Context: The centre has given environmental approval for the Kalasa Banduri drinking water project in Karnataka.
The project proposes to divert water from Mahadayi (Mondovi) river from Kalasa and Banduri canals into the Malaprabha River.
The project aims to facilitate drinking water for 13 towns of Dharwad Belagavi, Bagalkot and Gadag, which is part of northern Karnataka home to the second most arid regions in the country after Rajasthan.
But Mahadayi is the lifeline of Goa. And Goa has been resisting any diversions as it would hurt the fragile ecosystem of the coastal state.
The river originates from a cluster of 30 springs at Bhimgad in the Western Ghats in the Belagavi district of Karnataka. The river flows through the states of Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra.
